Plan a Day in Greensburg

Home of the Famous “Tower Tree” Courthouse

Whether you spend a half day or a whole day in the town of Greensburg, there is a lot to do and see while you’re here!

A first ‘must see’ is the Decatur County Courthouse, located Downtown Greensburg. A tree is growing out of the top of the Courthouse and has been there since the 1870’s. This tree is definitely a phenomenon of nature. While at the Courthouse, you can also visit the Memorials & Monuments located around the Courthouse Square.  There is a lot of great history there!

Take a Drive…

Take a drive through the country of beautiful Decatur County. The town of Westport is located 14 miles South of Greensburg. Just outside of the town limits is  a great piece of history, The Westport Covered Bridge.

The bridge  was built in 1880, and is a single span, burr arch bridge on limestone abutments. It measures 130 feet long, 16 feet wide and 13 feet high. It is topped by a gable roof and sided with shiplap siding. It is one of the numerous covered bridges built by A.M. Kennedy & Sons.

The Westport Covered Bridge was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1982. It was limited to pedestrian traffic only in 1973. However, in 2003 a federal grant was received and refurbishment began on the bridge. On August 14, 2004 the bridge was rededicated and vehicles were once again permitted to drive across the bridge.

Set Your Sights On…

After seeing Southern Decatur County, travel to Northern Decatur County and set your sights on The Strauther Pleak Round Barn.  The Strauther Pleak Round Barn, also known as the “Pleak-Morgan Barn”, is just north of Greensburg. Built in 1914, it was listed on the National Register of Historical Places in 1993. The barn is part of farmstead with a circa 1940 Indiana limestone ranch house, smoke house, spring house and garage. The main drive is looped enclosing a pen with a chicken coop and smaller barn.

After a Long Day of Site-Seeing…

After a busy day of site-seeing. Wind down and enjoy a dinner at one of our great local restaurants. We have a variety to choose from. You can enjoy fast food or a sit down meal. Greensburg offers foods from nationalities such as Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, Indonesian, of course great American food. You can even find a place to have home made pies!
